Job Description

The Breast Imaging department is affiliated with the division of Diagnostic Radiology. Forty dedicated breast radiologists and two part-time breast faculty participate in the multimodality practice of breast radiology, including:

Summary

The primary purpose of the Nurse Navigator position is to provide individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome health care system constraints and facilitate timely access to quality medical and psychosocial care from screening and pre-diagnosis of cancer through placement into appropriate treatment clinics. The Nurse Navigator works closely with physicians and staff in all specialty areas to coordinate the patient's plan of care and communicates with all members of the team on behalf of the patient.

This position will be Monday - Friday, 8A - 5P.

Job Specific Competencies:

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Facilitates the entry of patients into the breast cancer program by reviewing breast imaging results and medical history indicative of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.

2. Develops strong relationships with physicians, their office staff, community resources and healthcare providers to assure that there are multiple options for patient care.

3. Triages and refers newly diagnosed breast cancer cases to appropriate service for further care coordination.

4. Obtains medical records, imaging/pathology, and insurance information for various team members to expedite initial consultation.

5. Actively involves the patient/family in the plan of care and conducts patient/family education as appropriate.

6. Acts as a resource to facilitate timely breast cancer care.

7. Develops relationships with all MDACC breast program physicians and serves as a liaison between MDACC physicians and patient's referring physician.

8. Provides access to community resources and links patients to support services such as: social work, nutrition, psychologist, pastoral care, physical therapy and rehabilitation, financial counseling, integrative medicine, etc.

9. Assists clinic staff, research nurses, and physicians with accruing eligible cancer patients to clinical trials.

10. Assists with tracking of metrics and quality indicators for diagnosing and treating cancers promptly and effectively.

11. Becomes proficient in and utilizes MDACC patient care records for documentation of care. Provides reports and organizes data as requested.

12. Assumes other leadership roles as required by the center.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing

Preferred: Master's degree in Nursing

Experience: Five years professional oncology nursing or oncology nurse navigation experience. With preferred degree, three years professional oncology nursing or oncology nurse navigation experience. With preferred degree, two years Advanced Practice Registered Nurse experience in an oncology setting.

Certification/License

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
